I no longer had to worry about using all of my lives or losing my points after falling off of a stage too many times, which made things easier. Gameplay retains the arcade-y, point-focused feel of the original titles while making a few tweaks to ensure that Banana Mania doesn’t seem like it was ripped from an arcade cabinet. Narrative isn’t really a strong (or necessary) part of Monkey Ball. The complete courses of Monkey Balls 1 and 2 are also considered part of the main game and are labeled as “challenges”. After seeing the first few short cutscenes, I found myself wanting to skip them and just get on with the stages. It’s more of a sickeningly cute loose thread that connects the game’s themed worlds together.
The story plays much less of a role than it does in Deluxe there’s no dialogue and very little actual story content. Bad-Boon steals all of them, sending the monkeys on a journey across the game’s world to get their yellow fruit back.
Friendly monkeys AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon, and Baby simply want to enjoy some bananas, but the nefarious Dr. The main attractionīanana Mania pulls its narrative and many of its stages from Super Monkey Ball Deluxe‘s story mode. It’s more akin to a chore than a fun throwback. While the game is undeniably Monkey Ball, it felt like Monkey Ball through a filter: Distorted and just different enough to throw me off my game. In stark contrast, I played Banana Mania mostly alone, curled up on my sofa and attempting to figure out each stage by myself. We’ve both played the original game so many times that it’s mostly muscle memory at this point. We’d shout at each other as we blasted our monkeys in Monkey Race and knocked each other off the stage in Monkey Fight.

Super Monkey Ball was a staple of my childhood: I spent many an hour crowded around the TV with my younger sister, passing the controller back and forth as we attempted to fudge our way through the Expert-level stages. I went into Banana Mania expecting the best. The game was developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku, a Sega-affiliated development team with strong ties to Amusement Visions (the original game’s developer), and published by Sega. It brings together all of the courses from the first three games in the series: Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2, and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, the last of which was simply a compilation of the first two games, effectively making Banana Mania a compilation of a compilation.

There aren’t many games on this console that can boast to be a family party game either, so it was great to sit down and play with the kids who enjoyed the 4 players local co-op. The comic book style storytelling was easy to skip past when it became a bit too much but it was also important to take it in every now and then as the illustrations are quite stunningly put together. I reviewed Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania on a PS5 and the step-up in graphics was extremely noticeable. Some of the levels you’ll recognise from previous titles in the series and that is just a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, those Iconic levels are really part of what makes this title so much fun. There are 10 beautifully coloured worlds with over 300 stages, so we are talking HOURS of gameplay. You play as AiAi and his monkey buddies to thwart the nefarious Dr Bad-Boon (great name) who is trying to keep the world’s banana supply away from you.
